This BLOG focuses on interesting, unique, and inspiring quotes and proverbs. One of my favorite phrases is "Kill two birds with one stone."

SKELETON IN THE CUPBOARD (skeleton in the closet) A discreditable or embarrassing fact that someone wishes to keep just a secret.


"We all have our hidden secrets, our skeletons in the closet, our feelings of guilt; these things weigh on everyone to some extent."


"By keeping the skeletons in the cupboard, she was saved from a huge embarrassment."


"The couple doesn't seem to have any skeletons in the cupboard until the police dig deeper."


STICK OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB means to be very obviously different from the surrounding people or things.


e.g. "He said he doesn't want to join the meeting, he sticks out like a sore thumb on his gashly outfit."

"From a distance, the woman sticks out like a sore thumb among other women at the party."


THE APPLE DOESN'T FALL FAR FROM THE TREE or the apple never falls far from the tree

means important family characteristics are usually inherited.


e.g. "Her daughter soon showed her singing talent, proving that the apple never falls far from the tree."


GIVE (SOMEONE) THE COLD SHOULDER means to be intentionally unfriendly towards someone: ignore


e.g. "He started giving me the cold shoulder after we broke up."


LEND AN EAR means to listen carefully or sympathetically: keep one's ears open, listen


e.g. If you need someone to talk to, the Talkw/ow team is here to lend you an ear.


PAIN IN THE NECK means an annoying person, object, or situation


e.g. She is an incredible pain in the neck when she’s starving.


SPILL THE BEANS means to reveal secret information unintentionally or indiscreetly.


e.g. He apologized for spilling the beans about the movie series' next episode. He thought that it might lessen my excitement, but, in fact, it made me more excited to watch it.

COUCH POTATO means a person who spends little or no time exercising and a great deal of time watching television; lazy


e.g. Even if you're an incurable couch potato, there's no excuse for not taking regular exercise.
